Edwardian Irish Crochet Lace Blouse



Exquisite Edwardian blouse of Irish crochet lace mixed with a soft cotton lace over cotton net. A perfect Gibson Girl style from around 1900, it has the characteristic high neck and long puffed sleeves with a small waist. Irish crochet lace is one of my favorite hand made laces, not only because it's beautiful and dimensional, but it's also very strong and durable. The unusual Arts and Crafts period stylized rose motif shows the dimensional aspect with layers of petals. This type of lace was developed in Ireland as a cottage industry during the Great Potato Famine to provide a means of support for Irish families. It was very popular around the turn-of-the-century and later. The blouse is about a size 4-6, and measures approx. 15" across the shoulders, 24" outside sleeve length, 36" bust, 25" waist, 14 1/2" back waist length, and 17" front waist length. The base of the neck opening is rather small, about 13 1/2", but not impossible, and this look calls for a longish slim neck. One of the rose petals on the right sleeve end is a little frayed with tiny light brown spots, but otherwise, the blouse is in excellent wearable condition. Beautifully detailed, with small mother-of-pearl buttons fastening the back, the blouse is a wonderful addition to a fine vintage clothing collection or bridal ensemble. #VS604
